The Berlin Wall represents the various walls that continue to be created today. Sometimes walls are built to keep someone out. Other times to keep someone in. Just as there are always 2 sides to every Wall, there are 2 sides to every Story.
Walls are not only made of concrete. Walls are more complex.
Walls are often self imposed constructed out of our own creation.
Walls are made of fear, insecurity, misperception and misunderstanding, resignation, stereotypes and uncertainty.
Walls can be dismantled. As we listen to each other; one Story, one person at a time our misperceptions and misunderstandings fall away. Here’s to breaking through and breaking down walls on this 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
The desire for freedom, whether political or personal, is strong. The desire to see what is on the other side propels us.
Yet how many of us are stuck or stay in a situation because of a wall, self imposed or seemingly placed upon us?
How can we look at that wall with new eyes and begin to dismantle it thought by thought, Story by Story, step by step until we truly break through to the other side?
Here’s to all of us listening, learning, growing and breaking down the walls of fear, insecurity and stereotypes so that we may celebrate and understand each other.
